Oliver Carr Jr. To Receive ULI Lifetime Achievement Award

Thrilled to share that our fearless founder, Oliver T. Carr, Jr., will be honored with a lifetime achievement award in November by the Urban Land Institute for “having demonstrated a lifetime commitment to the highest standards of responsible development”.

His remarkable career that began in home building continues today with his vision of addressing the needs of the changing workplace.  Even back in the day when he studied urban planning at GWU, he was thinking of ways to incorporate community into development.   Nowadays, we experience this passion for community through his vision for the WorkReady concept which provides space and professional services to those outgrowing traditional flexible workspace solutions.

His focus on community has manifested itself in so many different ways over the course of his career.  Early on it was by leading the development of downtown DC after the 1968 riots; then in the 1980’s, restoring America’s beloved meeting place and landmark The Willard Hotel.  These days we experience it with his interest in millennials and the changing collaborative workforce.  This has resulted in new, innovative workplace offerings from Carr Workplaces – like WorkReady Suites – and others that at once provide independence for businesses but also an opportunity for community within.

Ultimately, it’s about making the work experience happy, healthy and engaging – that people thrive when they feel comfortable and welcome, that they are energized by the exposure and input from others and that life is simply richer and more rewarding when you share it with others. The sense of community can be enabled through technology, whether it’s an online member portal and directory,  or experienced in-person through community cafes, lounges and seating in a traditional office building.  It’s like the local coffee meeting house brought inside to the otherwise often-sterile office building environment.

We’re excited about these concepts here at Carr Workplaces and we’re thrilled to have our very own visionary being recognized for making these concepts turn into something real.

Hope you can join us to celebrate this lifetime achievement award at the beautiful Building Museum in November!

Congratulations Mr. Carr!
